Dr Perrier’s famous bells
Dr Louis Perrier bought the Les Bouillens spring in 1898 and opened a spa on the site, but he also bottled water here for sale. The underground ‘bells’ in the picture permitted Dr Perrier to collect the natural carbon dioxide gas from underground that carbonates each bottle of Perrier, and to re-inject it therein so that the drink’s carbonation levels are the same as that of the Vergèze spring.
