London-based company, IntelligentX Brewing Co, has created a premium beer that uses complex machine learning algorithms to improve future batches.

The beer takes reviews from consumers, which is fed back to the AI and used in the brewing algorithm.

The co-founders behind the technology say AI is the perfect way to respond to the fast-evolving craft beer revolution as it can respond to user feedback with speed.

Brewers’ intuition – into an algorithm

IntelligentX has launched limited edition ‘pirate black’ bottles of beer, and consumers are invited to use an online feedback system to review the drink.

Rob McInerney, co-founder of IntelligentX said the process starts by working with the brewer to “encode their intuition into our algorithm.”

Once the beer is brewed, it can take feedback from consumers to help the beer evolve.

“AI is about making decisions, and when you’re brewing beer there are a lot of decisions that need to be made,” he said.

“We take all the choices – the ingredients, the methods and so on – and put that in a data structure that the AI understands.”

IntelligentX co-founder  Huw Leith added, “There’s a craft brewing revolution happening across the world right now, and people’s tastes are changing faster than ever before as a result. AI is the perfect way to respond.”
