Speaking as a Liverpool fan, although we love him, and there’s no doubting his talent, I have to say that Suarez is an odd choice for a brand ambassador, given the animosity he evokes in fans of rival soccer clubs.
(For the sake of our US readers who don't follow UK soccer, Suarez is commonly reckoned to be one of the Top 5 players in the world at the current time.)
I guess we’ll see whether the campaign – see video below – works out well for Pepsi in the UK.
Suarez has cleaned up his image on the pitch this season. Just watch out for the deleterious effects of sugar-sweetened drinks on those gnashers, eh Luis?
One word on his T-Shirt – ‘The Suarez’. It’s like ‘The King’ or ‘The Fonz’, isn’t it? He might have cracked 30 Premier League goals so far this season – only the third player since football was apparently invented in the 1992/93 season – but that use of the article is a bit naff…Expect a rash of Ebay imitations though!
