Crown Holdings is planning to open a second beverage can line at its plant in Osmaniye, Turkey, with operations expected to begin in the first quarter of 2017.

Crown has two beverage can plants in Turkey, in Izmit and Osmaniye. The line is expected to have an initial annual production capacity of approximately 900 million two-piece aluminum beverage cans in multiple sizes.

Line will double Osmaniye's annual production capacity

The plant currently produces 800 million beverage cans, and the additional line will more than double the Osmaniye plant's annual production capacity to over 1.7 billion cans.

Peter Lockley, senior VP, Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East, said the expansion is in response to a growing demand in Turkey, where sales of empty beverage cans exceeded 2.6 billion units last year, and surrounding countries.

"We are extremely pleased with strong customer demand throughout the region. The plant is well located to supply customers in both Turkey and neighboring countries," he said.

"The Osmaniye plant has operated efficiently from the outset, and the addition of a second line was anticipated when the facility was planned."

Integra intelligent double seaming system

In other news, Crown recently launched the Integra intelligent double seaming system to monitor the quality of seams, for fault free, packaged products.

Double seaming is a critical step in the canning process, creating an airtight seal that helps to preserve product freshness and prevent degradation.

The Integra system is a software and hardware technology installed on fillers’ lines to measure double seam quality on all types of metal cans filled and seamed on rotary seamers.

It can eliminate errors such as missed, loose or double ends, knocked-down flanges, or situations where the food or beverage product has entered into the seam.

The computerized system detects one-off and patterns of faulty incidents and collects the data on all occurrences so that it can be evaluated at a later stage.

Crown supplies the system’s installation, training and back-up monitoring and support.
