‘Space might taste like raspberries’: Grey Goose partners with Virgin Galactic spaceflight

Virgin Galactic's first commercial spaceflight is planned for 2015

Grey Goose vodka has announced its official partnership with Virgin Galactic, the first commercial passenger flight into space. 

Grey Goose, a premium vodka brand from Bacardi, says both companies have a ‘passionate pursuit of the extraordinary.’ As part of the deal Grey Goose will promote a range of ‘out of this world experiences’, exclusive content and a series of limited edition packs.

It will also have exclusive sponsorship activity at the Virgin Galactic launch location at Spaceport America, New Mexico.

Peppercorns and raspberries

Joe McCanta, global brand ambassador, Grey Goose told BeverageDaily.com it has developed two cocktail serves which ‘explore the taste of space’ on the senses to celebrate the partnership.

The Grey Goose ‘Galactic Martini’ cocktail and ‘Beyond the Clouds’ cocktail have been specially created to explore the intriguing notion of the ‘taste of space,’” he said.

While no one knows for sure, astronomers have speculated space might taste like raspberries, having discovered in 2009 that ethyl formate, the compound widely reported as having the aroma of fruits such as raspberries, is also present in space.

The Grey Goose ‘Taste of Space’ cocktails have been crafted to celebrate the astrobiologists’ findings. In response to the commonly reported fact that the astronauts’ sense of taste and smell are dulled in space by weightlessness, Grey Goose has incorporated spicy fresh black peppercorns, as well as raspberries, to heighten the taste profile of the cocktails.

The Galactic Martini Cocktail and Beyond the Clouds Cocktail will be available at bars and nightclubs worldwide.

First commercial spaceflight in 2015

The Grey Goose and Virgin Galactic partnership was announced at the Rose Space Center and Planetarium in New York recently, by Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson, George Whitesides (Virgin Galactic CEO), Ben Farlow (global category director premium white spirits) and François Thibault (Grey Goose creator and Maître de Chai).

The first commercial flight into space is scheduled for spring 2015. Seats costs £250,000 and so far Virgin Galactic has accepted more than $80m in deposits from approximately 700 individuals.
